The 'big orange light' was a very worthwhile thing to fit. I once holed the sump and then the light came on. Pushed the clutch down immediately and switched off. No damage was caused to the engine. Just get the sump welded up and all was OK again. A minimum cost problem. Just a few gaskets and a few hours work.

The flip side to that is I did not have an orange light . The diff pin broke on an event and holed the casing, I didn't know until the engine seized!
A long costly night...........

My holed sump was caused by a sheared diff casing bolt which came loose and sheared. That was punched through the diff casing which caused the oil to flow out. As we sat there, in the middle of the night, the puddle of oil under the car was huge. Thank goodness for the 'big orange light'!
Then we got lucky,. A guy came along the road who had been watching and he towed us to his farm about two miles away near Kirkby Stephen and we put the car in his barn with his immaculate 1972 Mexico. There was a time control a mile down the road and the marshal gave us a lift to the finish in Morecambe, where we had a sleep, had a meal, got our trailer and went and collected the Mini. I had the engine out on the Monday, the gearbox was welded up on Wednesday and it all went back together the following weekend. The guy who did the welding is a CAA Approved welder and he didn't charge me as I had done him a few favours and I used to buy Shell 100LL aircraft petrol for the Mini from him.
The ironic thing is the only part of that Mini either my son or I didn't build or restore ourselves was the gearbox. You live & learn!
