Hi all

I'm new to this site as I recently bought my first mini van, a 1980 Austin,

https://www.dropbox....mAyZuPHV8a?dl=0

and would like to replace the current mk2 grill with a mk1 grill, moustache and whiskers. Do I need to remove the pressed grill panel to do this? I rather rashly bought one from P & L minis ( Mk1 MORRIS COOPER GRILLE PACKAGE (24A2158KIT) before thinking of asking you guys what was involved or if this is the right one! Also, as you can see, the pressed panel has been cut to accommodate the 1275cc metro (I assume) starter motor. Is this a problem?

Also, I would like to fit 10" wheels. What wheel width would look best with group 2 arches without catching when turning? I think the van currently has spacers (not sure what size) to fit the current arches so I'm guessing this will affect things? The current wheels ar 12x5" ultralites.

Any advice most welcome!! Lots more stupid questions to follow!!

Cheers
Jim

i would fit it over as the original front panel with the pressed Grill is not available and people will pay good money for original Vans.

original wheels where 3.5 X 10s

Thanks, but I can't see how the moustache fits on as the holes for attaching are a long way from the pressed panel

Also, I was hoping for a wider wheel than a 3.5, will this be possible? Not sure how I'll know what fits without buying and trying?

you will need to drill holes.

i was only stating original size.

most sizes require some wing trimming depending on ride height so pick a wheel size and tyre size and go for it.

165 70 10s needed wing adjustments with discs what ever wheelsize. oh spacers make it worse.

most 10s will fit under GP2 on drums.

Cheers, thanks for that.

Should have mentioned the front brakes have been upgraded to Minisport 8.4" vented & grooved discs. Having read some of the posts on the forum I'm guessing that rules out 10" wheels?

Told you there'd be more stupid questions!

I would suggest going to Fiesta disks if you want 10" wheels. The smaller wheels will be well worth it in terms of handling, and, in my opinion, looks.

The shape of a van front is not quite the same as a saloon, so you may not get a very good fit. I don't want to tell you that the van front looks better, because that is a purely personal thing, and I am not sure, but some people have done the reverse by fitting a replica van grille on saloons. The loose grille, never actually used on vans, seems to be no longer available.

Replica van fronts are still available:
