I've got the steering rack set and the top arm jacked up so I can get the hub back into the top and bottom arms, but when I put the CV joint through the axle I then can't get the hub into the top axle, it's sitting about 3/4" away from the hole.

It's as if the axle is too long.  I've had the CV joint off and as far as I can tell it's back on properly, should there be any spline sticking out the back of the joint, how should that sit there?  The other one went on perfectly, but I really don't want to have to strip that axle down again to check how that one's sitting.

Can I keep smacking it without breaking anything at the pot joint end?

Got to get this car to the garage by tomorrow to save paying for a second MOT, so any tips and tricks please share!

Thanks.

how is the inner CV sitting? if the shaft has been pulled out the balls may be resting on the rim of the Pot joint. a quick squeeze and it should slide back in.

you should not need to hit anything.

hard to guess the issue as your words are incorrect. "top axle" I guess top arm

shaft goes in to the flat C ring presses on the CV inner cage.

inner end goes in fully to the shoulder no splines visible.

Just popped the boot off again, there's 5mm of spline sticking out the back of the CV joint; is this going to be my problem?

The inner CV joint is fully in the pot, so that's not it.  I suppose I should knock the outer CV off again and try fitting it again.

Just checked, the bit of spline sticking out is the bit behind the flat washer and the flat washer is fully seated against the CV joint.

Which sort of suggests it's the inner CV joint that's not going far enough in, but I've not done anything to this shaft other than knock the outer CV off with the shaft in place, so can't see how anything could have got behind the shaft at that end to stop it.

So annoying!

Panic over, tried it again and it went this time, I think the outer cv wasn't quite seating on the axle until I rotated it to match where the steering wheel was pointing.
