To Coil Or Not To Coil?

Best Answer Spider , 14 September 2017 - 10:34 PM

No.

Coil Springs simply don't have the travel in them for stock ride heights.

While there are many springs on the market, they all have this issue. You need around 44 mm of travel (or compression) at the cone.

Here's a rate comparison between rubber cones and the 'Blue Coils' that Mini Spares (and others) sell;-

To get a very similar rate, that will work, just go to Red Spot Cones, however, if the roads are on the rough side, I'd suggest stock cones.

,,,, I'm on record as saying I have them and apart from not sinking over time,,,,

That was one reason I looked in to them so long ago (in the late 80's) and spent some considerable time trying all kinds of things to get them to work (on the front),,,,

However,,,,,

As many of us don't drive them daily an we all have trolley jacks, a suggestion I give to slow down the sag / sinking is to slip the jack under the front and lift the wheels just off the ground when not in use (can do the same at the rear, but I've found they don't sag nearly as fast as the fronts). They last shed loads longer,,,,

It's just a matter of getting in to the habit,,,,,,

That sounds like a good idea. It needs some sort of an over centre quick lift that sits under the sub frame. To allow for the rotational movement of the lifting arms on the jack, what do you think would be the furthest point forward you could support it on the sub frame?

sinking over time.   mmm how about one of the most common MOT failures on cars with springs (not minis) is broken springs.  leaf or coil they break.

I was only talking about mine. :proud:

I've got a sketch or drawing of the BMC over-centre quick lift somewhere.

Was thinking of building something like that for mine, would love to see the BMC version!
