Hi everyone,

 

Im wondering if anyone can help me please, i want to know what carburettor is the right one for my mini. The engine size of my mini is a 1100cc, the carburettor i have on it now is supposedly a HIF44 SU 44mm carburettor, I have brought a SU HS4 carburettor which is what someone told me is the correct one. But what I want to know is if it should be a 4 bolt fixing or a 2 bolt fixing carburettor.

if the inlet manifold has been changed it may be 4 stud type. original Minis were 2 stud.

 

 

but why are you changing? what issues were you having?

the problems im getting is that the engine is spluttering in 4th gear in low revs, but the carburettor i have got on my engine is from a 1275gt or a 1300 engine thats what someone has told me

have you changed the needle to suit the engine? does the "new" carb have the correct needle? you would do better to get your current one set correctly.

I've rang up SU before now and they have confirmed if I can get the correct needle etc for it to run for my car. 

 

It certainly saved spending money on a lot of bits through trial and error.

 

Does the carb still have the tag with the carb part number on it? ie AU13 etc

no the tag with the part number on it is no longer there so i dont know what the part number is

It depends on the overall engine specification and the use to which the car will be put.

If it is a highly tuned engine which will be revved to 6000 and maybe a bit over a lot of the time (unlikely with a 1098 engine) then an HIF44 should be fine. However, a fairly basic 1098 engine, which is not really designed for high revs will work well with an HS4.

Whichever carb you decide on it will need the correct needle fitted in order to run properly. Ideally go to a good rolling road and have it set up professionally.

10H791AA = 1975-80 clubman 1098 engine

HS4 have 2 fixing bolts (Manifold was 12G3279 -no longer available)

HIF44 have 4 bolts.

Easy way to remember the difference: hIF carburetor - Integral Float

                                                              hS carburetor - Separate float

I always thought hif was horizontal integrated float
HS= horizon short body
(Not that semantics matter)

Could be.... for all i know HIF could mean Happy-meals Invoke Flatulance :unsure:.

Just easy to remember S= Seperate Float Bowl.
