Hi All,

I've just bought a 2001 Cooper MPI and the horn has stopped working.  I changed the stereo last weekend and I'm wondering if I've 'upset' something behind the dash.  The horn was working when I bought it and the alarm still sounds the horn so I know the fuse and horn are good.  Research suggests the rotary coupling but I'm wondering if the stereo change has done something.

If it is the rotary coupling, is it recommended to change yourself as the airbag worries me.

Similar happened to me, horn suddenly failed. First I pull off the airbag fuse, removed air bag, unpluged the horn connecter. I used a wire to to connect the connecter's pin and earth(metel) to check if horn was working and it was, so i checked the connection of the upper and bottom plugs on the rotary and find out that the pins in use was disconnected somehow. There were other pins not in use in the connecters so I switched tho another pins and it's been working good.

Thanks for this info, very useful. I've ordered a rotary coupling for an MG on eBay which has the same part number for £19.  I'm really nervous of taking off the air bag though.  I may have to take it to a garage being the big wuss I am.

It's pretty straight forward to remove the airbag, to be safe disconnect the battery, there are two torx bolts at the bottom of steering wheel, remove the bolts and the airbag will pop up and then disconnect the plug.

So, I've bought a new rotary coupling and booked an auto electrician as I didn't want to do the airbag myself.  Tested the horn this morning and it's working :Grrr.  I don't know what's going on but I'll cancel the autospark.

Sorry but the airbag is dead simple to remove. Please don't be scared to jump in with the mini. You'll be raked over the coals by going to a mechanic for every little thing. As mentioned elsewhere the airbag is retained with two torx screws behind the wheel. Unscrew those and the airbag lifts out with the wiring connected to the column. Unplug it and set it aside.

I understand the concern but it's likely your air bag doesn't even work any way.

Further developments.  I used the Mini at lunch time and the horn was working on my way out.  I used the screen wash and wipers and it stopped working again.  On my way back I used the wipers again and it started to work again so I'm not suspecting the rotary coupling any more.  Is there any way the washers/wipers can affect the horn?  Has anyone seen this before?

Check all of the wiring connections inside the steering cowling and lower down where they connect into the main wiring loom - sounds like an intermittenet connection in one of the multiplugs.

Thanks for the encouragement.  I'll have a go.

Thanks for the advice, I'll take a look at the weekend.  I'm planning to find the wires to fit a lights on buzzer so I'll take the cowl off then.  I'm guessing it will come off without taking the steering wheel off.
