Electrical Voltages And General Gremlins Help

Best Answer Club man , 05 October 2017 - 01:55 PM

I don't think anyone is reading this but just incase.

I had a body earth terminal on the starter + with the battery cable. This caused the weird circuit readings and it was also triggering a relay that should trigger when the key is turned which was causing the voltage drain when the battery was connected. Go to the full post

Hello

Hope to get some help with this.

I have installed an mpi engine and loom into an 89, it came from my own running driving car.

I have installed a good battery from another car it reads 12.80 volts when disconnected and holds the charge.

When I have it connected it I get a slight voltage drop.

At the starter and alternator I am reading around 9 volts and the dash gauge also shows around the same.

The reading at the alternator which is a brand new unit is fluctuating

My fuel pump is not engaging as normal with the first turn of the key (maybe needs a 12v signal)

The engine will turn over

The battery is drained to around 10/11 volts after 30 minutes and that's with no cranking over time.

So far I have checked and cleaned all the earth points, tried a different battery checked all my plugs are tight.

Any advice would be great, thank you

What battery cable are you using for the positive feed to the alternator...?

It sounds to me that you have a voltage drop through the battery cable and possibly an earth connection somewhere.

Disconnect the alternator and test the voltage signal again, if its the same reading as you had before, it won't be the alternator.

The only common is the battery + feed.

Thanks mini freak, I'll will do this next when the battery is charged.

Although I think it only had two wires from the loom, one big ring and one small ring so should be on right, I hope.

I did get a bit confused around the connections which go to the starter motor as there are so many. I tried to refer to some pictures on line as to what went where. Maybe I have messed up and got crossed over here somewhere?

Can anyone tell me what I should have going to my starter I have looked at a couple of wiring diagrams but they are too complex for me, I don't really understand what I'm looking at.

I have 5 wires on the positive side bolt, one being the battery cable then another big cable going to the fuse box and 3 smaller ones.

and then I have 1 on the negative side bolt and also 1 spade connection
