Electrical Issues: Flasher Unit/horn/radio

Best Answer brivinci , 22 October 2017 - 12:48 AM

Oh, this is a good one...

I started tracing the fog/spot wires. Which, to be honest, was a good exercise so I could confirm colors, routing location, and which relay is which. Ill be drawing up a proper diagram to add to my collection.

Anyway! I traced the wires and noticed that i had no power at the brown 12v leads. A quick search showed that I had left that power lead off the starters post. Dumb!! Reattached and all is well and all lights are working now. Go to the full post

According to the wiring diagrams it is fuse LF5 (15 Amp), Auxiliary Cooling Fan Relay. This is the one I had to repair on my car. I has nothing to do with your  LF14 (15 Amp, purple/purple) for the driving lights. However, if you have two spot/driving lights and two fog lights independently operated then the wiring diagram are messy. The only Rover ones I have seen is for the Japanese Mini and they are wired differently.

It seems that your main problem is in the fuse box area for fuse 3-4.

What did the MPi cars come with, when fitted with 4 aux lights up front? All spot lights?

Yes, my car has two spots and two fogs...though I replaced the fogs with spots as they are more useful for me. They run on different circuits. The spots (should) come on whenever the main beams are on. The fogs have a switch in the interior. IT looks like your standard Rover rocker switch, but lights up green. It actually appears to be working as the switch lights up when switched on and comes on when the lights are turned on. I'll have to start chasing wires.

If you look at page 32 of the PDF, you will find the the UK MPI fog and spot light wiring diagram. It might help to chase the wires.

I wonder if the Japan specific diagram on the next page would be more accurate? They were more SPi, no?

Probably not, because the spot lights are turned off when the fogs are on. My Japanese 94 works that way. I understand that in the UK models you can turn on the spots and fogs all at the same time.

Interesting think you bring up. My Monte is a UK Mini. When I bought it, I could have sworn that the fogs and spots were never on at the same time. I hit a deer, stripped the car and when I reassembled it, the fogs would stay on with the spots. Maybe I just had it wrong in my head though. Currently, the the fogs come on with the dip beams (when switched on) and then stay on when you switch to main beams with the spots on. I love it this way. When I hit my flashers, it REALLY gets peoples attention:-)

Well well, guess what problem I still have!! Yep! No horn and shorting radio.

To recap, I have replaced the stalk with an NOS unit AND found that I had a disconnected main brown feed wire on the starter. This problem seem to have been sorted for some time but the other day, I went to toot the horn and got nothing. Radio reset itself and, of course, no flasher. Figured I'd see if I can go through everything again to find a solution.

First port of call is to look at the Fuse 3-4 power in and out. Can't remember if I had done that before now. I'll keep you all posted on any outcomes.

Dragging this one up!

So, I have the problem of not having a horn, shorting of the radio, and no flasher function on and off. Clearly a short somewhere. Well...I think I may have found it. At least, I found another potential issues.

I was installing a new petrol tank neck grommet and foam seal so I pulled the tank out. Something I have done a few times over the years. While in there, I noticed that the wires going to numberplate lights were caught in the lower tank strap and there wires were exposed. Not sure if this was where my issues were coming from but its certainly not good and I sorted straight away. Since that, I have not had any of the same issues with the horn/radio/flashers. fingers crossed.
