Hi all,

Just installed my new boot floor and on the underside of the old one there were two reinfocement plates welded in, just under the rear seat back bottom, either side of the floor.

Are they needed ?

Thanks

The ones that sit above the subframe? No get rid, or ratjer don't install on a new floor- rust trap.

OK, but why are they there ? We all know if Rover could have saved a few pennies by not welding them in then they would have left them off the car.

If it's the plates I'm thinking off they sat above felt pads on the top of the rear subframe, presumably the intention of the felt was to prevent any metal to metal contact with subframe movement and so the plates provided something more subtancial for the subframe to hit. However I have never had a problem with clearance issues. Equally the felt pads just retain water and accelerate rust.

They were there to prevent the drumming effect of the boot floor caused by vibration of the subframe when driving.

I seem to remember the plates (10x5cm ish) where for the hydrlastic suspension bump stop.
It was just on all the minis and mass produced, so I guess Rover just didn't bother deleting them as they where already on all the stock parts they had. A part forgotten by time and passed on since the mk1.

Or so I seem to remember... 🙄

The paltes would have been fine IF they had seam welded them on, but no that were held on with a couple of spot welds plus the felt pad which = RUST. New floors = no plates.

Those will trap water and cause rust. Much better to clean some paint off and seam weld right round, so the edges are completely sealed. Then water will not penetrate.

I think this is part number ALA5534. Tiger is right, weld it all around and I'd add a brush full of seam sealer as well.

Supposedly a bump stop and if memory serves me right it was more to do with Hydro subbies rather than dry. Correct me if I’m wrong.

But what do these plates do ?

Sonnikk's probably right - but I have a few "official" Rover Visual aid sheets dated 7/10/75 and they are shown on there. It would be unthinkable for Rover to include them if they were redundant at that date. Puzzling!! Perhaps during testing the seat base was denting/cracking the floor there?

There again perhaps my sheets were never updated!

You don't say what year your Mini is.
