Problem is same as title, has been running fine for the year I've owned it and now randomly decides to run rich while cold, then sorts itself out it seems. I'm stumped as is the father as he is new to injection mini's. 
Any and all help appreciated.

Check and replace the CTS (coolant temp sensor) located on bottom of throttle body/Injector manifold.

 

If that seems to be OK, possibly (as mine was) the inlet manifold water heater is very possibly blocked with limescale and crap... thus the hot waterflow is not getting to the CTS and telling the ECU to stop running rich...

 

Mine had the same problem where it wasn't getting warm (or it didnt seem to be) until stuck in traffic.... then it would run fine....

 

I changed everything, including CTS and thermostat, didnt cure it. Changed the inlet manifold and it ran perfect afetr that. Inspected the inlet manifold and its absolutely caked in limescale....

Agree with the above but I'd perhaps flush the manifold first to dislodge any crud that might be in there. See whether this works first as it's easy to do. Changing the CTS is a fiddly and more time consuming job.

Borrow a code reader, or if it’s a keeper buy one. It will save you guessing and wasting time and money or parts which are not faulty.

As always if the vacuum pipes are new (ie you have changed them) bun the lot and replace with new and a new full trap. This will eliminate the most common root cause.

If it runs well after warming up, the manifold heater or its wiring may be dodgy especially since you said 'randomly'. Its not uncommon for the terminals at both the multi-relay and and heater to get corroded and heat up, causing plastic melting and making the problem worse............
