Throttle Wont Return To Idle Without Lifting Pedal Up Maunally.

Best Answer happydude2012 , 12 November 2017 - 12:30 PM

SOLVED -

The throttle cable was too tight so the throttle cam on the side of the carb wouldnt return to its resting position at idle.

i undid the idle adjustment screw as far as i could and the revs stayed the same, so i loosened the little nut which holds the end of the throttle cable and pushed the cam back to its resting place and the engine stalled - i nipped the nut up again tight and tightened the idle screw until the cam started to move a little - i started the car and just adjusted the revs to about 800 (by ear....no rev gauge).

Problem solved, engine now returns to idle after revving from the pedal and i can control the idle speed as i should be able to.

Hi all

Replaced my throttle cable today as the old one frayed. New problem

The cable sheath is correctly secured in the bulkhead and tightly fastened at the carb - its responsive and properly set - however, when i adjusted the idle speed because its revving to high, the engine tone doesnt change unless i lift the throttle pedal up a few more mill, it then stays put until i blip the throttle again, and then it doesnt return to its idle as set.

The pedal itself had been greased and is not restricted - any takers?

Could it be a spring somewhere on the throttle mech at the carb?

Have you checked for the springs as you say?

All you want to do is pull the throttle wide open then drop it and gently push it to see if the spring is working and returning it to idle

On the carb this is on the right side and is used to close the throttle when the pedal is released .

If it was working fine before the cable change, i would assume something with the cable or its routing.  Its worth checking where it goes through the bulkhead, as they can rub there and make the cable really sticky, usually affecting throttle return like you are experiencing.  And lube the cable as they can also bind up along the way.
