My 93 Mayfair 1275 had the transmission changed from auto to manual some time before I bought the car.

It is still listed as auto on the DVLA documents.

Insurance is due for renewal and I have always declared the manual transmission along with stage 1 kit.

I'm looking around for insurance quotes and some websites automatically fill in the car details and won't allow me to make any changes.

Does anyone know how to change the details at DVLA? The V5 document only has pre printed boxes for engine details/capacity/VIN etc.

Did you declare the new engine number on the V5C?

The issue you face is despite telling the DVLA it's changed from an auto to a manual, it doesn't seem to change any records with regards to insurance etc. If it doesn't change, then you'll have to declare it to the insurance as a modification.

If there is an issue with details on the quote ring the company in question and they should be able to sort that out.

Granted that probably quite annoying, but getting a good deal on insurance takes abit of leg work.

Change was done before I bought the car.

The engine number is correct on the V5 so that has been recorded.

The 'automatic' shows up under Body type on the V5 so maybe changing details doesn't alter that.

It's never been a problem when talking to insurers or filling in the more detailed application forms but some of the bigger insurers use very limited online forms.

I know, it takes a while, but with a premium increase of nearly 50% with no changes to car or circumstances, I'll just have to do the legwork!

Thanks for the input.

The 'Automatic' listing most likely comes up from the car's VIN, it's included in that code.

The unfortunate official line is that while the insurance company captures most of the data from the price comparison site, when you click through to buy the insurance, it is still down to the individual to check on the insurance companies website that all the details they have are correct.

Some operate slightly differently so minor details can be off, they rely on you to correct these things.

If it started life as an auto then, technically, a change to a manual is a modification. Just declare is as such and there should be no problems.

Its never really been a problem as I've always used specialist insurers (Carole Nash/Flux) and declared it, but as the car is a 1993 it doesn't qualify as a classic under some insurers and I just wanted to get a wider range of quotes as a 50% premium increase seems a bit excessive.

Best price so far is to add it to my daily car policy but need to look at the ins and outs of that.

There is no reason why you can't get classic insurance from one of the specialists. The car is over 20 years old.
