This may be a daft question but do any of the off-the-peg conversion subframes for the VTEC/Redtop/Micra keep the standard mini suspension?

or do they require using the modified donor's suspension/driveshafts etc?

Or is there any other or better way of doing an engine conversion but maintaining 10" wheels?

Yes, the allspeed VTEC subframes allow you to use cones and 10inch wheels while keeping the standard track & wheelbase. You will need driveshafts & outer CV's though, which they can provide. I can't say much about the other conversions though!

Pretty much all conversions can use mini suspension / wheels, with the right subframe

It really depends how much work you want / can do yourself, with allspeed theres not much in it as you say, but good thing with allspeed is that they basically make the lot, subframe, driveshafts, etc. There are also a few guys about on facebook that can build you a vtec or rover k series frame. If you can build a subframe yourself you'll save loads, with each conversion there will be fabrication involved, bulkhead mods, driveshafts, engine mounts. Most conversions will need inner wings removed and a flip front too

Micra: Cheap, lots available, not many body mods, 5 gears, fit under roundnose easy, not the most powerful

Vtec: More expensive, can require body mods, more power, tight under roundnose

Rover: Cheapish, different engine choice, can require body mods, good power, tight under roundnose

Thanks Will16. Don't want to fabricate much myself, skills dont lie in that area...

Also don't really want to remove inner wings or fit a flip front so what option does that leave if any?

Thats fair enough, I believe a Micra K11 lump will go in with inner wings still in place, or it might be worth looking at the BMW K motor bike head conversions, pricey, but still a mini engine but with more power

Cheers, I've sent Allspeed a message to confirm

If you're putting in a powerful engine, the last thing I'd want to be cheaping out on is the subframe.

yeah, totally agree. i just don't want to cut the body work if possible so it can all be undone if necessary  :D

its worth pointing out that 165/70/10's and 175/50/13's have almost exactly the same rolling radius,

Yes, but the handling is MUCH better on 10 inch wheels, so it should be much more fun to drive. It is not all about power, although that does matter!

There will be limitations on how much power you can safely put through any particular wheel and tyre combination, but you may not be near that limit. However please bear in mind that wide tyres are bad in wet conditions, or with too much camber. Try to take a balanced view of what is required, and build yourself a good all-rounder, for maximum driving pleasure.

The easiest "foreign" engine to fit seems to be the Micra.
