Plumbing the manifold only prevents carb icing, which we won't get in the UK or EU.

This is incorrect, please stop repeating it. It has nothing to do with carb icing.

Then why do the Japanese motorcycles of the 90s have a similar set up with the coolant system plumbed up... Ah yes fuel economy AND carb icing 😉

I own and run 90s Japanese motorbikes, most heat the float bowl to prevent carb icing, not the manifolds. (And it doesnt work - commuting in winter on one isnt much fun).

Thats the important difference - systems built to prevent carb icing typically heat the carb in some way not the manifold.

The charge flow has too little time in the manifold on a Mini to impart enough energy to defrost a frozen fuel flow (the same reason as to why a heated manifold doesnt hurt performance). The anti-icing mechanism on a Mini is the diverter flap which allows air to drawn from around the exhaust manifold and the inherent volume of the air box.

Why would anyone collect overflow in a beer can (or anything else) ?

In most Minis the overflow will be full of rust, gunk, grot, crap and other various s**t.

Replace with clean water weekly.

Bemused...

As for carb icing I've heard about it on VERY OLD aeroplanes....

two reasons,

if your on the drag strip or race track you mut have a catch can for water ( and oil)

if you need to top up at the side of the road in the middle of nowhere and youve used the bottle of water in the boot... and in the washers... and you dont need a pee...
