Morning all

One of my work colleagues wants a dash cam (I am also considering one) but I have realised that I know absolutely nothing about them.

Can anyone help me regarding ease of fitment, models to go for etc? Even how much they cost?

I am like Jon Snow. I know nothing!

I've bought 2 next base one from halfords (about £45) which were rated quite high, but after not very much use one stopped charging and the other stopped recording. I've now bought a garmin dash cam 55, and although expensive at £150 is a lot better quality than the nextbase. It's small too, so great for the mini as it fits behind the rear view mirror. it has a magnet on the camera and you stick the magnetic dot to your screen.

I use ones made by Novus, One front and rear. They have gps and also indicate from which direction the impact came from. Come with software to use google maps to view recordings. They are insurance approved, you can pick them up off ebay from £50-150

I've had a few off ebay at £25 to £35 and all do the job fine if you are not worried about insurance approved. I buy the ones that are a similar shape to the rear view mirror (kind of oblong with a lens in the front, centre) and mount them on the screen behind the mirror, just to keep the screen clear.

this sort of shape...

These are the AutoExpress 2017 dashcam reviews below which may help but check out others like Which? and Sunday Times motoring reviews will often give different results on what they consider best. Also interesting to hear above that with 'real world everyday use' the Halfords Nextbase cameras failed even though they are highly recommended in the AutoExpress tests.....

I've got three nextbase ones running and one road hawk.

The road hawk one I bought was from seeing what truckers who used to deliver to me use - mine has GPS and is HD however you can get cheaper ones with GPS.

Black vue was another I looked at - some insurance companies have approved ones they'll accept and some offer you discounts.

Check reviews before you buy any at all.

I have a mobius dash cam in mine. Had it about 18 months and its been fine. Its very discreet because its only about the size of a tic tac box.
Good clear pictures both night and day. It doesnt have gps tho.

Another note for Möbius. Used them in various cars and they are awesome, small and cheap too! I did have a next base 412gw which I won on eBay fairly cheap to try out, but that only lasted a fortnight till I sold it on. I would like the Black Vue 2 channel set up, but can't justify the price just yet!

BlackVue are the ones I use, expensive but good piece of kit. Never had any problems.

As Quincy says, Techmoan is a good (seemingly) unbiased channel.
