Are you sure neither wheel was turning? If the brakes are binding slightly on one wheel then the diff will drive the other when it's on the stands.

Check to see if the inner pot joints are rotating. Sometimes the driveshaft can pull the joint apart so you loose drive altogether, particularly with non standard suspension geometry.

Both wheels definitely not turning. I will have to check the CV joints tomorrow. Seems odd to me I thought that if both wheels were stopped the engine should stall

The engine will stall - if in a gear and clutch not slipping and nothing else broken. But the fact that the speedo is rising demonstrates that the 3rd motion (output) shaft of the gearbox is turning. This drives the final drive pinion, driving the crownwheel/diff and driveshaft etc. So the fact your wheels are not turning shows that the problem is somewhere inbetween. If your car was fine before, I doubt there has suddenly been a major mechanical failure inside the gearbox, hence I'm thinking driveshaft.

Jack it up, both wheels airborne, and see if turning one moves the other in the opposite direction. If the answer's no it's your diff.

put your foot on the brake while doing this. The engine should stop dead.
