Born in England, live in Canada and just bought a mini from Japan.Trying to figure out exactly what I've bought. From the vin it should be a SPI manual Mayfair but the interior is throwing me off. I want to order parts(oil filter, stage 1 kit...) so they are here once the car arrives in DEC but I want to make sure I am getting the right stuff.

Any insight?

If there are any Canadians of site please PM, I would love to chat.

waiting a month to have this car delivered from Japan is killing me.  I've got a bunch of question that I am hoping someone will answer.

1. when was internal bonnet released? My mini is a very late model SPI (1996) and needs a new grill need to know if it will need a internal bonnet release.

2. Is classic castrol 20w50 a good oil for a late SPI model?

Hello folks. what do you guys consider as maintenance items on a spi car. So far I've ordered the following

-Oil filter

-Oil

-New sparks

-New spark plug leads

-New light bulbs all-round

What am I missing?

It not something you've said, it's the way you've asked it. If you want the answer to a technical question ask it in the technical area. Not many members look for technical questions in the introduce me section. Secondly, what do they recommend in the Haynes?

thanks Northernpower, I am new to this forum and appreciate the help. I've ordered the Haynes book with my part order from minisport but I haven't got it yet. I'll stop being inpatient and wait.

No problem. The other thing you may want to consider is becoming a TMF+ member. It only costs £5 and one of the benefits is you'll be able to get discounts from suppliers including 7.5% from MiniSpares and it supports the forum as well.

It looks like an MPI to me as it's got a coilpack instead of a distributor. The aircon meant the jap cars kept the side mounted radiator.

It's not entirely standard, the grille is Mk1 Mini pattern, it's a popular Mini fashion item, so you can buy all sorts of variations that weren't original, with or without bonnet release openings.

well that would suck, hope it's not a mpi or I will be selling a bunch of parts already. From one site I've seen the serial number indicates its a SPI SAXXNNWAXBBD1*****,

Any other things to look for to tell from pictures, I've got a tone more.

I did a little googling. Seems the jap spi might use a coilpack of some sort however it may be different that the uk mpi parts.
Half the fun/frustration of this car will be figuring out what uk parts work

I'm not very clued up on injection cars, but it should be obvious from looking under the filter at the throttle body & injector(s). I'm not sure if the SPI ECU could fire a wasted spark coilpack, I suppose it could.

From one of your pics it does look like there might be an SRS (airbag) warning light on the dash?
