The car is still on the boat crossing the pond so I only have pics to go by.

I did a little googling. Seems the jap spi might use a coilpack of some sort however it may be different that the uk mpi parts.
Half the fun/frustration of this car will be figuring out what uk parts work

the Jap spec cars were a mix of MPI and SPI

they were different to the UK spec cars but nothing much that was not used elsewhere.

There are a few items on the car that are specific to the aircon models and pretty much all of them are no longer available or difficult to come by second hand. Get yourself a grease gun to make sure all points are fully lubricated - its something that often goes over looked for new mini owners.

any good sites to compare part numbers from uk to Jap, so I dont keep ordering the wrong parts.

As Nick wrote above it’s a JDM spec car, 1996/7 being the change point to coil pack.
MPi block fitted with SPi injection system. Service it with normal SPi parts except you don’t need a distributor cap and rotor.
Do replace all vacuum pipes and fuel trap as these are also service items and you want to be sure they are in good order to prevent fuelling issues. Fuel filter on rear subframe should be changed but you’ll need to wait until it arrives to check which one is fitted.
Normal mini servicing plugs tappets oil, grease points etc plus I would give it a heavy dose of wax underneath and in in all box sections to keep the rust at bay I use bilthamber products on mine.

Looks nice..enjoy
