Why not a piece of black vinyl? That might be a bit easier

tried, the shape of the bonnet means it wrinkles on one side

You need to heat it and apply it properly. It won't wrinkle that way.

There are different grade vinyls. The cheaper ones are thicker and shrink a lot so dont heat too well. If you went to a sign maker and asked for a long term cast type vinyl it would definitely heat and stretch. Its like the type they do vehicle wraps in. Also needs to be applied wet, usuallly with an added slipping agent.
i have tried many times having it done using vinyl, it wont work, hence why i asked about what spray to use, not vinyl

If not, just any can of satin black paint, screwfix or Halfords etc. Mask the area and scuff it with 400 first.
Though having the plate like that looks gash.. isn't legal in any way

the Mk1 in your example was built by a mate of mine (had a supercharged 1330 in it too), he sprayed it in rustoleum (inc the bonnet square).
any satin black paint will do what you are looking for, it is more the careful masking of it with decent tape to get the sharp edges to keep it looking neat.
I know you've ruled out vinyl, but might be worth getting a local sign writer to quote for it as they'd be able to do it perfectly and may even have some left overs to do it from.

I'm quite surprised you've had no luck with the vinyl. I did a set of BMW kidney grills the other day using vinyl and got a great result!

Do it in vinyl as you're going to have to move the numberplate to a vertical surface for the MOT.
4th time of saying that i tried with vinyl and it didnt work, read the rest of the thread next time

I did and you're not doing it properly then. How do think cars are vinyl wrapped without wrinkling? Perseverance, a heat gun and a plastic scraper.4th time of saying that i tried with vinyl and it didnt work, read the rest of the thread next timeDo it in vinyl as you're going to have to move the numberplate to a vertical surface for the MOT.

look im sick of having to repeat myself, it has been tried many times and it didnt work, heat guns and all, you have not been present when it has been attempted so less of the arogant attitude

Plastidip would be ideal if you want to be able to remove it again, I assume you'll be using vinyl lettering

i will have a look for plastidip, and yes i have the vinyl letters ready for it, as for the looks of the car, its being done for a rally replica so it will look good, not worried about legality of it either
