Do it in vinyl as you're going to have to move the numberplate to a vertical surface for the MOT.

4th time of saying that i tried with vinyl and it didnt work, read the rest of the thread next time

Just so you know I've read your thread and if done correctly you can apply vinyl. I understand you may want to paint it but if you want to give vinyl another go, first you need the correct vinyl and secondly don't be concerned about using too much heat to soften the vinyl during the application process. To give you an idea have a look at this videohttps://youtu.be/tF5NWzIS4ZI

of applying vinyl to a crash helmet which has greater curves than a mini bonnet.

Mask where you want to spray, rough surface with 1500 grit wet and dry, spray with matt/satin black. Saves pis5ing around on here when we're trying to workout why vinyl isn't work and just trying to help you.

I have always found the vinyl a pain to get on smoothly. I use a satin black paint after priming with grey primer. Just mask the area off, sub down and spray. The one on my 1964 'S' has been on there since I prepared it as a rally car. The only problem I had was in the middle of the night in Wales on a rally when a Welsh copper told me it was illegal. Luckily my friend who was then a Met Police Inspector was there and he basically told the young cop to 'naff off', which he wisely did (lol).

You can buy the correct size vinyl letter/numbers from any sign company, or make them yourself from a template down-loaded from the web.

Sounds like spraying is the best option.

Paint is permanent. And it's fun to paint your number plate on the bonnet.

Most coppers don't really know (or care) whether it's legal or not but you'll need a friendly garage to pass it for the MOT

if the car isn't old enough for it to have been legal when it was built.

OR... you can just whack on the standard flat plastic job on the day of the MOT of course...

1) Buy a couple of copies of the Daily Telegraph (the only broadsheet newspaper left).

2) Mask off the area you want to paint and plaster the rest of the car in newspaper (spray paint Luuuuurves to travel and a light haze on the windscreen is no fun).

3) Sand it as described in previous posts.

4) Paint the square / rectangle as desired with matt paint.

5) Leave it a few hours.

6) Second light coat of matt paint and allow to dry thoroughly.

7) Buy a vinyl square version of your number plate online and very, very carefully cut out the number to make a stencil. (this should of course be step one but you would have stopped reading at the mention of vynil....)

Or make your own with sticky letters from B&Q for sixpence.

8) Cut each number separately out of the stencil, gently heat (not in water) and apply to the square.

9) when it looks right spray the opposite colour to the background - but don't take them off !    Leave a couple of hours and spray again...  Leave a couple of hours and remove the stencils.

Now you're looking good....

Had this on my Mini for years. Was never stopped, never had an MOT issue even though it wasn't technically legal for it's age.

Which gets you thinking about all those '80s and '90s MX5s....  ???

Oh - one more thing - just be careful to get the regulation size and font stickers for the age of your car otherwise you WILL get pulled again and again...

I have painted the number plate background across the bonnet in an almost flat plane by removing the bonnet badge and having a normal rectangular size black area with white stick-on numbers. That won't give any problems, although the MoT has never been an issue for me.

I did and you're not doing it properly then. How do think cars are vinyl wrapped without wrinkling? Perseverance, a heat gun and a plastic scraper.

look im sick of having to repeat myself, it has been tried many times and it didnt work, heat guns and all, you have not been present when it has been attempted so less of the arogant attitude

In that case, would anyone like any toast?
