Hi guys,

Im hoping that you will be able to help me on this one, i was going through some mini magazines this evening and i noticed that one of the minis has white and black front plates and the rear had black and red. Upon trying to find some information on this it appears that cars pre 87 had the option of having these colours but it seems that this was in ireland. Am i able to have red and black plates on the rear in england or is it a no go?

I have found this on a pdf file on the department of transport which i presume is from ireland

  1. Vehicles first registered prior to 1 January 1987

    (a) Reflex Reflecting Registration Plates
Front registration plates should have black numbers and letters on a white background. Rear registration plates should have black numbers and letters on a red or white background.

    (b) Non-Reflex Reflecting Registration Plates
Front and rear registration plates should have white, silver or light grey numbers and letters on a black background.

© Back Lit Registration Numbers and Letters
Where registration numbers and letters are back lit the letters and figures must, when illuminated during lighting-up hours appear white in the front identification mark and either white or red in the rear identification mark. At all other times they should appear white on a black background.

    (d) Dimensions for letters and numbers should be as shown in the sketch on page 9.

no.

it was when we invaded them, but they chucked us out and we were left with NI. which is on the Island Ireland.

Ireland is a separate country and is part of the EU.

Only northern Ireland is part of the UK.  Great Britain is just the island England Scotland and Wales are in.

There's the British Isles (geography) of which Great Britain and Ireland are the biggest.

Britain (political) is an informal name for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Irish home rule was already agreed, WW1 just delayed things. The Easter uprising in 1917 and how it was put down polarised opinions on independence, keeping Northern Ireland in the UK. The Irish civil war bought about Eire being a republic and not self governing dominion, like Canada and Australia.
