Hi,

I'm almost complete in stripping out the interior of my 1997 MPi. All that is really left is all of the bits an pieces from the airbag systems.

There seems to be an electronics box under the rear seat plus off of the cabling in the yellow housing.

If I want to remove the steering wheel are the any precautions I need to take. Same with the pretensioners. Can I just disconnect all of the electrical plugs and everything will be OK?

Thanks,

Ben

Providing the battery is disconnected which I assume it is then they can just be carefully unplugged and removed.

Make sure you store the airbag and pretensioners in a safe place just as a precaution.

Cheers

Ben

As above, however if the battery is still connected, disconnect and wait at least 15 minutes for the capacitors to discharge in the Termic unit (the one under the back seat).

In the workshop manual it says the pre-tensioners have to replaced every 15 years. Given now my mini is 20 years old I guess they should be replaced? How should I dispose of the old ones given they are classed as explosives?

Thanks,

Ben

Store face up too! You don't want it flying thru the roof... 🙄
They state replacement on all cars, never seen someone change one...

another top tip when working with airbags ect is to touch some metal on the car first to discharge any static from your body.

where do you intend getting new ones from if your replacing them? I'm not clued up on the subject but id have thought you'd only be able to get nos items which as likely to be nearly as old as the ones currently fitted.

and if you are disposing of the old ones the only safe was is to detonate them. Simply connect some long extension wires to the airbag then at a safe distance touch them on to a battery.

That was going to be my next question. Where would you even buy new pre-tensioners?
