So i've just lost my job and funds are tight at the minute but on the brightside it's giving me a little while to get chance to look at restoring my little George. The first thing im going to tackle is the underneath as it has been a thing that ive not really looked after since i got him. How do others go about cleaning and repainting/rust proofing the underneath. My budget is a bit tight but want to do it right for cheap. Also how have people managed to fit under their mini to do this? Whats the best way to lift it up to get underneath.

for the subframe you can get a por15 rust buster starter kit for £20, a bigger tin of the rust buster is £40 i think. The starter kit contains the cleaner/degreaser and the metal prep. My mini is pretty clean underneath so ive scrapped off any waxoyl that is on there and then am using some por15 top coat aka chassic black. my car is black anyway, im not going for concourse looks more just for protection. So ive sticking some of that on the flitches inner wings etc then gonna go back over with some wax of some kind.

I'm looking at doing the same along with the engine bay in the spring. Planning on degreasing and pressure washing (don't have a hose or outside tap so something I need to look into or find someone for the price of a few beers) the whole underside and engine bay, then covering in plenty of stone chip and underseal. After rubbing down a treating any rust of course, witch there shouldn't be as it currently just looks a mess.

What stone chip and underseal are you going to use mines quite tidy other than where i've put some thick tar stuff on from when it was a daily driver.

Is that good enough on its own after cleaning all the dirt and stuff off or should itbe used with something else?

I've ben using the hammerie stone chip shield aerosols (have already done all 4 arches) and underseal in a tin, not the cheapest option as the spray cans are a bit expensive. But are the easiest and most widely available. Although like any coating, it's never a good idea to apply it directly over the top of rust, they only print that on the tins so lazy people only willing to half a job would buy it.

Although I'm not too sure on the underside of the floor pans until the current stuff is removed first. As I have the pervious owners underseal, another coating of mine, then about 10 years worth of road grime, odd patches of oil, mud and loads of overspray from the recent paintjob. Witch under all that lot i think may well be the original paint (or lack of know how Austin rover were back in the 80's) so I'll probably be adding a coat of primer at least first.

It dries really hard, it doesnt chip etc. It is going on top of exisiting paint, and then im gonna waxoyl it or similar just for peace of mind. Ive painted my sibframe, top arms and hubs in the rust buster stuff and it is really tough to make a mark on. The top coat is actually meant to go over the top of the rust buster but isnt nessicary
