I seem to remember that someone one produced hollow subframe tower bolts.

Am I imagining it ?

If not, does anyone have the details for who it was ?

I think the tread is called Titanium parts or someithing along that line. its an ebay link.

Centres of the bolts are 'hollow'.

There's a few guys on build threads who have hollowed them out, this is the one that springs to mind though the pictures aren't working for me

Also there's this guy who made some from scratch out of titanium, proper fabrication!

Does anyone know the size of the drill holes? I dropped some bolts off at an engineering workshop today for drilling out. It'd be nice to know the required size and maintain the maximum bolt strength.

Id drill it to 11.5-12mm max. Given its a 3/4unf bolt wich uses a 17.5mm drill hole according to my cheat sheet. Leaving a 3mm should be ample I think. As the subframe ltself is only 16gauge metal iirc. Though, personaly id never drill this, not worth the 200 gram weight loss for me

It is only really worth it if you need to regularly compress the rubber cone springs.

Is drilling all the way through the tower bolt sensible? It may be sized at 3/4UNF for a good reason, and a 12mm hole all the way through the middle will make it weaker.

If you drill it out to 14mm (enough to get a 14mm thread through for cone compressor) then it will be way too thin.

If you're running all solid mounts for the front subframe then might be possible to lose weight by machining the outer part between the thread and the bolt head, bring the diameter down close to the 3/4 UNF thread root diameter (17.5mm), but leaving a small lip at top under the bolt head to locate the alloy spacer ring.
