Is there any way of removing the nearside tail light cluster without loosening or removing the fuel tank?

yes you need a magic wand :D
or a fairy to do it for you :D

simply sadly not, but removing the tank is easy, you don't have to take it all the way out, just undo the bolt at the bottom and move the tank away so you can get your hand in to undo the nuts on the back

Slightly more difficult if you have the 5 1/2 gallon tank because of where the screw is but basically the same process. You have to take the fuel cap off to move the tank out of the wing and put it back on when it's inside the boot. It's very easy, just don't do it when the tank's got much fuel in and be careful it doesn't pour out of the vent hose if you get the tank at a funny angle.

And disconnect and preferably remove the battery before starting to do anything, even if the tank's empty. There could be quite a bit of vapour sloshing about the boot for a while during this and you don't want any sparks.

Job done as suggested - moving the tank to change the tail light also revealed a hole in the boot floor which I've needed to fill - but at least it may stop the water getting in - could never understand where it was coming from before!

now if that job could have been done without removing the tank you wouldn't have found the hole :D
