I'm hoping I can get help identifying some bearings in our gear box.

It is the original transmission in a 1961 Mini Minor built in September 1960. I think it is properly described as:

3 Synchro Cone Synchromesh with Pre 'A' Type gears

The descriptions I'm quoting are from the Mini Spares website.

1) BMC part number 2A3712 - Mainshaft Bearing - Pre '62 with 62.44 mm outside diameter.

It is clearly marked on the inner race with 1MDJT25G        R&M

According to both Somerford Mini and Mini Spares it is no longer available but there is a website (Bearing-Web.com) that has an exact match on the bearing number but no cross reference to the BMC number.

2) BMC number 2A3709 - 1st Motion Ball Bearing (3 Sync 1st Motion Single Roller).

Marked on the outer race with 21MJ1      R&M

Both Somerford & Mini Spares have stock on 2A3709 but neither show an R&M number nor an outside diameter. Again, I've found an exact match for 21MJ1 on Bearing-Web.

3) BMC number AAU8424 - Roller 1st Motion Shaft Pilot to Clutch Case.

I don't have the outer race out of the case yet but the inner is marked with 7/LRJ5/8   RHP and it has 10 balls.

Mini Spares picture of this bearing is marked with 1/LRJ15.8   RHP and it has 11 balls. On Bearing-Web I can get an exact match both LRJ5 & LRJ15 numbers but nothing when I include the prefix and suffix so I don't know if they are part of the bearing identification.

My choices on the first one are limited so I'll need to order it from Bearing-Web. In the absence of an outside diameter on the second I'm thinking I should also get it from Bearing-Web too even though they are much more expensive. The third, with presence of prefix and suffix has me wondering what to do.

thoughts and insights are greatly appreciated, thanks

Brian

There were 4 types of Casings used in the series up to this point and they all had different internal parts due to the on-going issues they were having with these early gearboxes and the factory's various 'fixes' (or 'design changes' as they preferred to put it).

Have a look behind where the Oil Filter would normally be for the Case Casting no. it will be 2A3708, 22A104, 22A145 or a 22A363.

I understand why you are trying to source the bearings locally, but we have trodden this path several times if you have a search...
John Guess from Guessworks (the gearbox specialist) will I am sure give his own view but from most posts previously including Johns state it works out easier and cheaper to source them from mini specialists rather than from bearing suppliers.

YMMV

thanks,

my preference would be to source from a Mini specialist but so far I haven't been able to find what I need from them, however I have contacted Guessworks...

just waiting on a reply

Could be, but with regards to you wanting a Mini Specialist. John Guess is pretty much THE authority to when it comes to rebuilding Mini Gearboxes at the moment. He supplied me with all the parts for my Innocenti Cooper gearbox rebuild and lots of advice and answers to any questions I had. For me he tended to reply fairly quickly but as you say it is the holiday period.
