Hi,

I'm about to start building an engine my car. I have been looking around for some cylinder heads, and have found that Moss make an aluminium 7 port head.

I know to avoid the Minisport heads, but has anyone got any experience with these Moss heads? I can't see anyone mentioning these before, are they new???

Thanks in advance.

Just had a look and the one thing that strikes me is the size of the valves. The SC 7 Port head valves are much larger and would help to flow much better.

I will be building one of these in the new year (once the bank balance has improved) going on a 1293 bottom end.

It looks like the Pierce castings head. They've been around for a good few years now, there were a few companies selling them at one point, including MED.
MED used to sell theirs as modified versions featuring improved porting and larger valve sizes, though they don't seem to list them on the website any more.
As standard they require some "finishing" and the small inlet may limit power, depending on your application ? What's your engine spec and intended use ?

Well, my engine at the moment is a standard metro 1275, but the plan is to bore it to 1310cc, Swiftune SW5 cam, 7 port head (twin Weber 45DCOE), balanced crank, lightened flywheel, straight cut box, LSD and ARP head studs.

I was hoping for around 100hp, but keeping it fairly reliable but still fairly quick. I did notice the smaller valves so if needed I will increase the valve size.

I assume if MED used to sell it, it should pretty good?

I'll keep it in mind whilst I'm in the build process.

Were you able to fit the bike carbs under the bonnet without cutting it? And was it expensive??

Twin 45's? way too much carb for that Spec unless your going to Rev the nuts off it all day. Go for twin 40's for a road car

By the time you've paid someone to cut the valve seats and alter the porting to suit the larger valve or valves and bought the valves it's not going to be a cheap head. Have you looked at the SC 7port ?

Far easier ways to get 100bhp, my daily mini gets 97 atf using a tame as (and surprisingly amazing sw5) and still a 5 porter.

7 porters need to rev, so really it's in the application of use. My other mini is a right cammy screamer, but a right pain when trying to daily..

There has been a lot of issues with the Pierce Heads over the years and I'm not sure they are on top of it.

If you go ahead with this, I'd suggest looking the head over very thoroughly when you get it out of the box, then having it pressure tested before doing anything with it.

Here's one guys experience, though, in this case, a B Series, but I know of similar issues with those for A Series. Seems mostly related to foundry and metallurgical issues.
