Engine / Gearbox Oil

Best Answer Ruth's Mini , 11 January 2018 - 12:39 PM

I checked and can source Valvoline VR1 20w50 here in Canada with no problem so will use it.

Looking at my owners manual the temp range we have here would need a 10-30. Maybe someone on here can explain why 10w30 valvoline vr1 wouldnt be as good as 20/50 valvoline vr1?

I have had simular thoughts about using a 10w40 oil as I also use my a-series in the winter, but I am having trouble finding a 10w40 oil with the right amount of zinc.

I always use Valvoline VR1 20w50. Superb oil for all Minis including full-on competition cars.

Yes

After looking at all the info/forum comments etc I have settled on Valvoline too.

20w50 either Valvoline VR1 or miller's CTV
has anyone tried the minispares own brand stuff?
Part number GUL7005T
http://www.minispare...c/GUL7005T.aspx

Have used for the past two oil changes, seems like a good oil but does seem to be thinner than Valvoline for the same rating

I thought the same, seems a thin 20W50, if that's possible!

Has anyone tried this stuff? 20W50, cheap, loads of zinc...

Yes, currently running it in my freshly rebuilt spi. Seems fine, nice and cheap and has the right stuff in it.

As has been mentioned I think regular changes with the correct zddp level oil are essential

I've run it in several engines including my current 7 port and have never had a problem. No matter what oil I've used I always change it regularly and their oil and filter offer makes it ridiculously good value.

Thats the stuff I'll be using after my engines run in. I bought the head from Kieth Calver recommended it.

its an interesting list of oils, interesting reading, but not a lot of those available or cheap in denmark. also I doubt that e.g castrol edge has > 1000 ppm of zddp as he writes and I cant find it in that viscosity.

Just tried Valvoline VR1 20/50 for the first time. Maintains pressure fairly consistently between hot and cold and gear selection feels a little easier.
However, compared to the Halfords oil that was drained out it takes a long time (many seconds) to build up pressure from a cold start.

Apologies for resurrecting a slightly old thread -  I've just bought a spi (93) - going off the recommendations I've just ordered this oil and filter so I know what's in the block as there's very little history with the car.

I'm just wondering what you consider regular oil changes - is it age related (every 6 months) or mileage related (every 5K miles?) or something else?

Thanks

Adrian

Be prepared for many different answers, all claiming to be correct!

Personally, I change the oil twice a year, and never with an interval of more than 1500 miles. It only costs about £30 a pop, a hell of a lot less than a gearbox or engine rebuild!

No love here for Castrol Classic XL? Also claims to have a high ZDDP content, specially for classic engines. Always worked well in my dad's MGA and Fulvia.

So sorry I never replied to this, I must have missed it.

I change mine every 3000 miles, which is normally about twice a year.
