Hi guys. As the title suggests, my 3 week old coolant looks pretty disgusting and i can't tell if its oil or gunk that i didn't flush out during the recent radiator drain.

Coolant is 3 weeks old where i replaced a faulty radiator temp switch. The mini doesn't overheat even in heavy traffic now (it used to because the aux fan wasn't coming on ... but it went into the red probably 3 times total). Looked into the rocker cover and it seems fine.

Here're some photos of the radiator, looking into the rocker and soaking up the gunk with a paper towel. What do you guys think?

And just to add ... i'm not losing coolant. When i soaked up the froth, the coolant level was still pretty good.

Is the oil clean, i.e. no signs of water on the dipstick?

Could oil have gotten into the coolant or coolant passageways when you changed the sensor? is the area around the sensor oily etc?

To me, it doesn't look terrible, and I've had my fair share of head gasket issues (though not mini related) and they've normally looked worse than that.

Doesnt look like head gasket. Maybe its all the gunk from radiator or even heater matrix just been stirred up and settling on top

I am more concerned about the lack of rockershaft locating grub screw and lock tab.

Oil is clean, dipstick checks out. And i took extra care around the sensor when i was draining it too.

Hopefully just gunk thank you guys!

Looks to me like whatever the new antifreeze was that you put in has reacted with what was in there before. It can happen. If that's the case you'll need to do a pretty thorough flush through. If you haven't done that in a while then it'll likely help overheat prevention even more.
