I've been offered an original 970 crank with a 10thou grind. What's a fair cash offer?

I sold one for £450 a couple of years ago with a fresh 0.010" grind on mains & big-ends and a virtually unmarked tail.

The 970 is a very rare engine. It is very short-stroke and was built solely for the purpose of winning in events with an 'up to 1 litre' class.

For a road car a 998 engine is better as the 970 always has a poorer torque figure at lower revs, but a 970 in race/rally spec will really rev, like up to around 8500 rpm, so it is very competitive when fitted with the right engine bits.

I once built a 970  rally engine with a big-valve gas-flowed head, twin HS4's,a 286 cam, steel flywheel, Omega pistons, etc. It ran with a static CR of 11:1 and gave 88 bhp at 7300 rpm when properly set-up. It had to have a SC CR gearbox and a 4.1:1 FDR. 7000 rpm in top was 90 mph.

Personally I never liked it as it was all revs and not much go, (compared to my 1275 'S' rally car) but it was a class-winner (unless there were any 998 Imps entered when it was a struggle to beat them).

The 970 'S' did win the British Touring Car Championship in 1965.

I thought I would post this as some don't know what a Mini Cooper 970 'S' was.
