Hi

I have just blown up the gearbox in my 99 Jap spec Rover mini sportspack. (put a pod through the gearbox)

I have been thinking about buying a minispares 5-speed box with a 3.44 diff.

It would give me better acceleration around town and I wont have pull any higher revs in 5th on the highway.

Opinions about this idea, or opinions on the minispares box would be greatly appreciated.

I will be having the motor rebuilt as standard with a possible rebore if needed.

ALSO

Can I do the above without having to have my speedo recalibrated? Originally has a 3.1 I believe.

I am in the process of removing motor at the moment

If you have put a rod through the box as said the whole unit is scrap. dont try and rebuild it. Scrap it and get a new unit.

Id stick with the good old 4 speed tried and tested, the 5 speed is weaker more expensive.

You can change the speedo drive gears in the gearbox to suit any final drive/ wheel size/ speedo combination.

Guessworks have a good online calculator.

I just had first hand experience of the gates in a 5 speed box and I would not be buying one anytime soon! The finesse with which you need to confidently select a gear is far to great for me! Rebuild a 4 speed unit with a good final drive for your requirements

Yeah migliacars it isnt real flash, here are a couple pics:
Engine is haddit... hoping block is salvagable, but won't know until its disassembled in regards to exact damage.

Found sitting on my sumpguard

No. 1 conrod/big end is still there, so I assume it is number 2 that has let go.

Thankyou Viz for the link.

Cian Thankyou for your opinion. Still not sure which way to go. :(

Thanks everyone

The whole engine and box is scrap. the head maybe to if the piston has kissed the valves.

Bin the lot even if some bits look ok. Dont sell it on either it will only break somebody elses heart.

The crank may look ok!? but it could have hair line fractures!!

Strange it has let go, if its a standard engine under normal use! has it been rebuilt of recent or did u miss a gear etc!

I do expect the worst and thought crank would need to be replaced. Engine builder mate said head depends on if piston touched valves as you said. Mate also said block possibly cracked and most engines he's seen do this are scrap.

Was a bog stock motor in a 99 Rover I imported from Japan, but seeing the silicone around the diff housing tells me its been played with.... So I assume some poor japanese engine builder did something wrong somewhere along the way.
