Hi all,

Just brought a 1997 Rover Mini Cooper MPI Sports pack on a P reg. (Its also my first post on here)

Its in the garage as it needed a few things doing before i could enjoy him. Problem is the front Camber is really out and the front wheels rub on lock.

The guy i am dealing with has three much older Mini's and tells me the wheels i have are the wrong ones as they have spacers. Hes checked the arches and confirms they are correct and genuine, but is convinced the wheels are wrong.

They are 13 inch and look exactly the same as all other sport pack wheels i have checked on google images. Ive looked online and many people say the car had spacers as standard.

He told me to buy new wheels so that they would fit correctly and as i also have two bald tyres. Been on Mini Sport and the Cooper Sport Wheels they are selling look identical to what i have.

Can anyone help me as i think im going a little Mad. Picture of my car attached.

Thanks

Marc

Sportspacks did have spacers (10mm?) on the rear.

You shouldn't have spacers at the front if that's what you mean?
It also look a bit low at the front, but that MIGHT be the picture. 🤔

could the steering rack have been replaced with a non sportspack item, as those racks were specific

there should only be spacers on the rear

check that the wheels are actually genuine, they should have ROVER cast in them

was the car originally a sportspack option or has it been done at a later date? The bodywork needs trimming around the arch to fit the large 13" wheels and this may not have been done if the sportspack arches have been added later

are the tie rods straight?

Are ant of the suspension components adjustable, including hi-lo's? as said it could be a bit low

First i would change the garage. this shoul de a easy fix. You definitly dont need new wheels.

the sportspack have 5mm spacers at the rear.

if something with the camber is wrong, check the suspension cones and knuckles.

First impressions, run from that garage, and find a classic, preferably Mini specialist, or local club for advice.

They are indeed standard fit wheels, and as above, rear wheels on sportspacks have a small spacer, 5/6mm iirc to clear the shock.

Could be a non cooper sports pack with the arches and wheels added later meaning it has the wrong steering rack. No spacers on the front with either mini. Just the back with SP mods

first things first check what the wheels actually are.

wheel off and look at the casting marks.

As a note, even factory sportspacks come up on stupid car part systems as 12x4.5m 145 tyres, not the factory fitted 13x6's..

Marc, i think the Garage is right in that they are the wrong wheels for your car - don't panic!

My guess is that you have a 1997 Mini Cooper that someone has fitted with Sports Pack wheels & arches without fitting the limited travel steering rack -hence the tyre scrubbing.

(Sports Pack option cars had 2 front fog lamps & 2 front driving lamps, also oil temp & voltage gauges amongst other things).

You have two options....

1. Change the wheels        &/or wheels + arches + wings!!!!!

2. Buy a set of these for £15.05 + p&p :-)   https://www.minisport.com/kad1012230-kad-mini-steering-rack-limiter-kit.html

Rack limiters won't solve the issue if the tyres are catching the front of the arches, it could also be that the arches have been replaced, without the wings being cut?

Some mpi's where fitted with 12" wheel up until the end in 2000.1 3" started in 1997 as a upgrade

some had 13" wheel fitted with arches ,steering rack, wings ,rear spacers , rear subframe , dampers ,space saver as well me thinks = sports pack

over the years the 12" versions have been changed to 13" with out doing a propa job .

ya log book may help if it sez copper = 12"
sports pack =13" but don't worries if it dose not as it depends what the person wrote down when the car was first registered varies quite a lot .

just looked on mine reg doc for the mini and its called a rover mini sport but I know its a sportpack.

take it a propa mini garage if ya want to know, not aa back street one .or a local good club ..

my 10p worth
