Well i took the wheels off.........

The good news is the wheels are Genuine Rover. Each one had a Rover stamp on the inside (see picture). They are all in pretty poor condition and two tyres are bald, so replacing the set seems like the way to go.

As for the spacers. All 4 had spacers that were about an inch wide, with extensions! The rear drums are the later type with the built in spacer. These spacers were huge, not the 5mm - 10mm people mentioned i might expect.

With the spacers removed the wheels all fit and there is still enough clearance at the rear (Will need to test on the road). As i cant drive the car, I've not really been able to test the front lock and i was a little tight on space in the garage. The arches do now sit well over the wheels. Without parking next to another Mini, i honestly cant say if its right.

I dont think the spacers were put on for any other reason except to widen the stance. It did look better being wider, but i would rather put wider wheels on then those stupid spacers.

The car still has negative camber at the front and appears to be sitting low. Couldn't even get a trolly jack under. I have two new shocks on order, not sure if the camber is related to a negative cam lower arm mod, or the cone and knuckles that have been mentioned.

Oh and to add to the stupidity, one drum and one calliper were painted blue, one calliper was red, and the other drum was unpainted. None of them were even painted in high temp paint, so as you can imagine they look a bit of a mess!

I remember when every motor factors stocked those spacers.

At least you don't need new bolts.

No its wasn't me who snapped one, it was already snapped. Until i took the wheel off it just looked like one nut was missing.

3 of the bolt extenders weren't even hand tight!

😐 no wonder they rubbed! That's just dangerous, specially at the front!
It should be fine by just taking them off and fitting new service items like new cones n'stuff.

Excellent news! Finally removed them lol. Also you don't need VHT paint for calipers.

My Pup had Fortech arches in the back when I bought it. This is 13x8s on the back with spacer drums and 1.25" spacers too!! :)

New shocks will not address the problem of sitting low. If the cones are collapsed, you need to change out the cones. Knuckles are cheap enough that while you're in there, change them regardless, assuming you can find a boot that'll last more than six months.

Why didn't the garage look at those spacers and remove them immediately?

I would have thought it quite obvious that aside from them being dangerous, that they would be causing issues

Ben raises a serious question, day one, week one for any competant mechanic.
Time to look for another garage.......

I haven’t seen a set of those spacers for about 20 years thank the lord. They were a terrible idea back in the ‘80’s & ‘90’s when they were often the first cheap and easy way of making any spotty yoofs first four wheeled disaster zone ‘cool’. Caused many a first trip into a ditch as one wheel departed the car when half way round a corner ..........

and as no one else seems to want to point it out... yes, that is now the arch to wheel spacing that a standard sportspack would have. They were always "over-arched".

Now you need to sort the ride height (rubber cone, NOT shock absorber) ans see what symptoms, if any, remain.
