I am looking to put new wheels on (12x5.5) would this require any modification to the body work.

depends on your car.

 

what is no it now? what is the ride height? (old and settled, lowered or as standard)

 

then there is the tyres you pan to fit as these have a bigger effect on what will or will not catch on the metal work.
