standard gears are quieter that the SC ones.

but a standard set do make some noise as they are not all helical cut.

Ok ta

Just looking into the heavy duty helical kit on minispares thats all, and with potentially going down the 7 port route. I want to try and stay away sc sets.

I am shortly going to remove the sc drop gears from my 'S' and refit the helical ones. Fed up with the noise the sc ones make.

Are you talking about the drop gears or the close ratio helical gearbox gears?

If wont be any louder than a standard helical gearbox.

realistically you'd be ok with a std helical box strength wise, depending on the usage it might  be worth looking at the "22G2049" laygear and 1st motion conversion kit to swap to "S" ratios, which are a 3.2:1 1st gear, vs the std 3.6:1.

the mini spares uporated helical kit is 2.5:1, so quite close, so depending what final drive you cant to use 1st could be quite tall. in the case of my motor with a 3.1 diff 50 in first is achivable.

Thank you for the info there mini13 thats been helpful

I think I'm just worried about the increase in torque factor, hence why I asked really. So I'll look Into what you mentioned above.

A carefully built stock helical gear train is good for around 125 HP / 110 ft/lb Torque (and more) - BUT it depends too on how you treat it.

No gearbox like impact loading, ie, dumping the clutch, getting airborne etc. That's a bigger killer than any amount of HPs or Torque you'll put through it.

Probably the biggest 'secret' is getting a good case to start with and in particular, one that's machined to best tolerances.

oops i meant 22g1040, typo!

very good point above on how you treat it, definalty the worst thing is shock loadings, from getting airborne etc, rallying seems to bee the hardest on components, probably even worse than drag racing.

a good road 7 port is going to be around 120hp, and 100ft lb, ive seen lots of turbo motors putting more than this through a std A+ box relativly reliably, around 140-150hp seems to be where stuff starts giving up ( assuming the box is in good condition) the teeth coming off the 1st motion/ flywheel end laygear seems to be the first thing.

there is a caveat, the diff is pretty weak, and you should stick in a X pin diff as a matter of course IMO.

that minispares helical kit is very interesting though,

I have 83lbs torque at the wheels from my 7 port through a standard box with a cross pin diff and no problems. I'm not easy on it but I don't dump the clutch and have only been airbourne a couple of times. In my opinion a standard well built box will be fine. As Cooperman mentioned, I changed to helical drops and the difference in driving enjoyment over long distances is significant.
