Conversion To Central Speedo Wiring

Cheers lads off to the Classic Car Show tomorrow on the hunt for some interior bits and pieces.

Looking at wiring diagrams for a few different year looms, the brown wire goes to the ignition, My ignition light colours in the above photos are brown/yellow so they should connect together.

You'll need to get another insulated lamp holder for the oil light, I forgot I added that in to the loom as well as the heated rear screen. You should have the white brown already in your car loom as they came with it from factory. you'll just need to add another white wire and a white/brown to the loom. The white wire is power and can be added to the other 2 white wires and recrimp them together and connect them the the white on the car loom. Then the white/brown in the conversion loom can be connected to the car loom. Then you need to Connect the White/brown wire to the body of the lamp holder and then the white goes to the middle of it (like the ignition wiring but that being brown/yellow attached to the body.

By the look of your picture you have the white/brown from the car loom connected to a white from the conversion loom.

So I need to connect the whites all together as power. Your right I have the white brown connected to a white which is incorrect I’ll sort that out. Did you screw your centre speedo housing directly to the bulkhead or did you use spacers. I have a mark IV body so it doesn’t have any holes for that at the moment. I’ll also need to drill a hole for the speedo cable. Thanks for all your help

You could do the same as you've done for the blacks (earths) and have them go into the 4 terminal joiner. I think the bottom slotted holes fit in the same position as the bottom holes on the bulkhead blanking plate and then I drilled and used rivnuts for the top (might be the other way around though. yep, the hole pretty much goes in the middle of that panel. Not the best photo of it but you can just about see the hole I drilled.

Hole drilled and all wires accounted for. I’ve got a stray green and white wire which is part of the lights loom. Cant think what its for and can’t find it on the wiring diagram. I also had an extra green and orange but I think that is the power to the heater fan, its on the same loop as the rev counter according to the diagram. I also have two white and red wires but I think these are for the automatic transmission inhibitor. I don’t know what year the loom is but I seem to have found everything. I’ve extended the wires for the REv Counter signal and earth and added a light on the circuit for it. Drilled some holes for the speedo cable and the oil pressure dial pipe. I have an old style circular mechanical oil pressure gauge which I prefer. It came with the car, as did a mechanical water temp gauge. It was a bit beaten up so I’ve bought a new electric water temp gauge. Also drilled some holes to fix the central binnacle in place.

I’m rather enjoying this I’ve missed fiddling with cars since I finished my last project almost 15 months ago.

Hi guys,

Picking up this thread again, as I am in exactly the same situation as Tonylamb. I'm pretty well advanced with the conversion from 2-clock offset instruments to new central speedo + water and oil gauges, using an aftermarket conversion loom. I've wired up the instruments, and it looks like I've reached exactly the same setup in terms of colours as Tonylamb. All that's left to do is to connect it all up to the car loom. I have ten wires coming out of the conversion loom, and ten wires in the car loom. However, not all of the colours match up. Here's how my instruments are wired up :

  • Voltage regulator B terminal : white
  • Top green bulb : green & white + red & green
  • Left orange bulb : red & green
  • Right orange bulb : red & green
  • Ignition light bulb : white + brown & yellow
  • High beam bulb : blue & white
  • Fuel gauge : green & black
  • Water temp gauge : green & blue + black + red & green
  • Oil pressure gauge : black + red & green

I attach photos of the instruments, front and back.

I also attach a few photos - one of the wired up instruments, and the other is of the multi-connector I cut off the car loom. I've labelled the colours.

As you can see, even though I have ten wires in both pics, some don't match up. There are two white wires on the conversion loom for a start, plus there are two red/green wires and two black wires which don't correspond with the car loom. Then on the car loom I have a brown/white wire and a red/white wire which aren't on the conversion loom.

Can either of you guys help me sort out the "odd" wires?

Also, if I mess up any of these connections, am I running any risk of blowing fuses or worse?

Couple of other questions : I'm given to understand that as I have an oil pressure gauge, I won't need an oil warning light, and that also my two separate indicators are "collapsed" into a single one (the green bulb at the top). That's fine, but if that's the case, what are the two orange lights on either side being used for?

Many thanks in advance !

Ric

Hey

Same situation but I have a different theory and I believe yours might be slightly wrong.

Maybe Im just wiring mine differently but for me it goes as follows... (and im building mine from old snipets that were attached to the speedo. Also got a new loom for the conversion but using the old positons that were installed)

  • Voltage regulator B terminal : white
  • Top green bulb (OIL PRESSURE) : Take whats on the cars loom. Cant remember the colours but it was said above in the posts before
  • Left orange bulb (LEFT BLINKER): Split the Green&Red and the Green&White cables that go to the solo blinker. Add a black as ground.
  • Right orange bulb (RIGHT BLINKER : The other one of the above + a Black
  • Ignition light bulb : white + brown & yellow
  • High beam bulb : blue & white
  • Fuel gauge : green & black
  • Water temp gauge : green & blue + black + red & green
  • Oil pressure gauge : black + red & green

The bulbs you have connected to the Left and Right orange bulbs are illumination bulbs. Those are the 2 red&green Solo wired bulbs. They go into the holes that you taped off. If you have them plugged into the oranges then they will just light constantly. Like posted above, some say the left and right orange were for oil pressure and oil- something else, but I know from seeing a few minis that most use them as their left and right blinkers. If you want I can take a photo of my loom in the speedo to show you, but im still missing the oil pressure light cable and I need to split the blinker bulb into two separate ones.

And I believe the extra cables that were on the car before are your tachometer cables? Not too sure but theyre probably from the revcounter

Hi luismx123. Hey, thanks for that! You're absolutely right about the illumination bulbs. They were taped off when I bought the speedo and I guess it was just for dust protection. I thought it was because they were unused. But what you say makes perfect sense.

I think I'll leave the blinkers blended together at the top though, I prefer green to orange for that, and I like the retro feel of having just one bulb for both :) I may add in an oil pressure light to one of the orange bulbs following The ClampMaker's method, and I'll leave the other unused for now. Or I might forgo the oil pressure light completely, as I have a gauge now. I'll see how it goes - the nearest Mini spares place is a long way away and it's a bit of a long journey just for one light bulb holder :)

Thanks!

Ric

Haha same for me. I order in bulk everytime I do something, and I always order more than I need when it coems to bulbs etc. I live in Austria, so its quite a while away to just "try" things and  then end up missing 1 bulb/plug and then waiting 2 weeks again -.-

Hi again,

OK, it's all done. Everything is in and working perfectly at first sight. Lamps, fuel gauge, oil pressure. I haven't yet taken it for a spin to check the water temp and speedo. I may have a few issues with the speedo though, as I believe I crossthreaded the cable end the the back of the dial :-( It was really difficult working blind, reaching in through the glovebox. I spent a good 30 minutes trying to screw it on - it refused to do more than 1-2 turns. But it seems solidly in place nonetheless. I'll need to drive it to find out.

So now I have two orange lamps that are spare in the main dial. I wonder what I can wire into those? I already have a light in the heated rear window switch, so I don't need another. Hmmm... any suggestions?

Ive read here that its good to get a longer cable for exactly that reason. You mount the cable first, then lay the dash back into its position. Check minispares. I think the standard is 26", and you can get 30" and up, so that can help in fitment :)

Regarding the 2 extra bulb slots... no idea. If you had classic lucas toggle switches you could wire the headlight or the fog lights into it, but your switches have lights anyways.

As for what light

Thanks for that tip! Just ordered a 36" one. The extra 10" will be more than enough. Now I need to find a source for bulkhead rubber grommets...
