a friend of mine has just bought a car, a mk3 astra with a number plate which reads "jhf7j" which contains my initials. he asked me if I wanted to buy the plate for £100, which seems reasonable.

is it just a case of paying £80 to the dvla and sending a few forms?

both vehicles are mot'd but the bike is registered to me and the donor astra is registered with my friend, is that going to cause a problem? or do both vehicles need to registered to the same person?

thanks.

Both vehicles don't need to be registered to the same person.

Or he could put it on retention and then it could be transferred

would it cost him to put it on retention?

I read on the net that if both vehicles are registered to me, are both mot'd, and both able to move under their own power, that can be inspected and then transferred for free?

Its always cost me a £80 transfer fee even when I have owned both vehicles.......(admin costs ;) )
Am I correct in thinking if on retention (£100 to set up ) then when you want to transfer its then free ?
Not 100% sure tho

Retention is (or was) £25 per year

I recently put a number on retention and the cost was £80.
There was no charge then for me to assign it to my new car when it arrived.
IIRC when you put the number on retention you can assign it to someone else but don’t hold me to it.
I did it all on line so it was a quick easy process.

Thanks for the info guys, it seems like a bit of a minefield really. I just don't want to end up going about it all wrong and paying for something I don't need to do

These days, the retention fee keeps the plates on a 10 year retention as opposed to £25 each year.

It should be £80 to put it on retention however the car needs to be MOT'd and available for inspection if needed.

First take it off the Astra with this link and £80

https://www.gov.uk/k...stration-number

Then use the retention cert number to assign it to your bike with this link

https://www.gov.uk/p...-number-vehicle

Done
