Looking to weld stainless for the first time. Would like to know what gas is best. Will probably get it from machine mart and they do Argon or Argon/co2. I read there is a helium90% Argon co2 mix too but that doesn't look available at machine mart. Any other useful tips much appreciated.

top tip.

have a totally separate welder and tools for welding stainless or you will find it will rust.

How much and what are you welding? If its any help, I welded a cat back for my mx5 from mostly stainless pipes and just normal mild 1.0mm wire and argonshield gas (works welder!), then gave the joints a coat of bbq paint to stop them rusting

Yep, its just for one job. Inlet manifold for my supercharger. So buying a load of equipment isn't an option. I prefer to use my existing MIG. Is the Argonshield pure Argon

to be honest I would farm it out.

people who weld both keep two separate systems as the stainless picks up carbon from the welder and you then get rust appearing. if you are not bothered about rust then I would just use normal wire it will weld fine. done it many a time.

I was going to use stainless wire too. Might just send it over to fusion fabrication as in don't want rust eventually going into the charger. I just fancied having a go

whatever was in the Mig at the time as it was not going to be a stainless weld.

like i said putting stainless wire in your mig and changing the gas will result in welds that could and most likely will go rusty.

really you need to change the liner for a fresh one and clean the feed wheels and torch and fir a fresh tip, gas wise you really need argon with 3-5%co2, ranther than the normal argo sheild or co2, also pure argon dosent work as well,

another thing is stainless often expands and contracts a lot when welding, when I did my first turbo exhaust it shrank a good 5+mm and I had to scut and extend it... PITA! the key is plenty of tacks and then do short sectionsand move around to other sections

of course if ypou get Matt at fusion to do it he wil tig it, which is another ballgame
