I thought I might start a thread on my project as a bit of a record for myself, and also to probably ask some questions as we go along.

It's a 97 standard mini which had been given an aftermarket Sportpack. I wanted an SPI or MPI car, mainly because I wanted the reliability of electronic ignition etc. It took a while to find a relatively solid one that was a reasonable price. First pic is how it looked on the day I bought it.....

The intention is to go for a Mk3 Cooper S style. If bodywork ends up meaning a bare shell, then I'll probably go for an earlier Mk1 colour, but I'm not worried about originality (it's a late car after all) I'm just doing what I want, which is part of the fun of a project I say! I've done the concours/originality thing with other cars, but this is just going to be a mini which reflects the different things I like from the whole 40 year spectrum.

So I fitted 7.5" cooper s style brakes in order to get the 10" minilite replicas on, and then began stripping the car. You can see below the stage that I'm at. It's about to go to the local garage for the engine out (hence my handy stool for driving it in and out of my garage!).

Once the engine is out, it will be going to a bodyshop in Hull for a new front end, a full paint strip, any other corrections and then respray. I'll take more photo's as things progress!

Cheers,

Rich.

Good luck on this one. Looks like a nice project and it'll definitely look good with the early retro styling.

Wow it looks so much better on 10s without the sportspack on. even with the arches being chopped. Nice work

Cheers guys. Yeah, the hi-los will need to bring it down a bit. Its got some additional spacers on the rear too which need to come off to make the wheels sit in the arch correctly.

Engine is also now out. Bulkhead/inner wings look fairly solid, but definitely some previous repairs there. See what its like when the paint is removed.

Small update: The body shop have made a start, removing the front panel and wings.

Looks like we'll be going for new inner wings, so it will be a full new front end from the bulkhead forwards.

Dashboard built up tonight. Excuse the bedspread workbench!

Managed to finally find the fabric bit that goes round the edge, like from the factory.

Slow going on the thread as the car has been waiting for its slot in the bodyshop.

Quick progress update on the engine and gearbox which have had a strip and rebuild with the following upgrades:

Swiftune SW5-07 cam kit

Swiftune Duplex Timing kit (steel)

MED ST1 Clutch/flywheel

Maniflow Manifold and system

Mild head polish/port and inlet and manifold matching

X Pin Diff

Central Oil pick up

And that's it! Engine is just about good to go (I'll get some pics up) so I just need the shell back now.

I'm very slow at keeping this up to date.

Engine is finished, and I've just given it a lick of paint. Just need a body to drop it in now!

It came back from the workshop with this oil filter, which is longer than the ones I bought from Minispares. Is that a problem? I'll check with the garage.

Front end trial fit, prior to dropping subframe and removing all paint. Good to finally see some progress on the body!

Hope your bodywork gets done soon for you.  All looks great so far.

Where did you get the fabric bit from?  As you know we've got similar issues and a water damaged dash is one of them!!  Following your posts now.

Hi Ben, and thanks for the comments!

The dashboard trim came from South Lakes Minis on ebay but they don't seem to be listing it anymore. Might be worth giving them a call?
