Hello, just bought my first mini on tuesday. it just broke down. I'm getting loud knocking noises when I press the accelerator and it feels incredibly unresponsive. I can barely get enough speed to get into second.

what do you recon could be the problem. The manual recons worn main bearing from the knocking noise that gets louder the more under load. but would that make it have less power?

What model is it, what engine is it and is it carb or injection. What's the history i.e. has the engine been rebuilt, how many miles has the engine done?

I would ask for your money back unless you knew it was a dog and got it for a bargain.

You are not giving us much information.

Sounds like it could well be bearings

I hope you get it resolved.

Sounds more like a blown head gasket than anything else. Simple things first. Compression check. If it’s blown between cylinders you won’t see water levels decrease etc. Each piston trying to compress the other bore makes a horrendous noise. Been there done that. Car would run, barely but it ran. Any throttle and it would bang and clatter like hell.

+1 for blown head gasket between 2 cylinders. This can make the engine sound like its bottom end has had it for the reasons Sonikk4 stated.

It is a noisy problem, I agree, but I have always had it accompanied by a rapid temperature rise and steam.

I hope it is the Gasket, rather than the bearings, but I would be looking for recompense.

Recompensation won't work anyway. Seller can't help things like this. ( Not always anyway).
Checking the compression, oil pressure, ignition timing,... Should be your first checks now. Got any local mini specialists?
Haven't seen a lot of A series with bearing problems to be honest. The headgasket is a lot more common.

sorry, its a mini 1000, 1981, single carb. oil is on the full marker, it has water.

i have been told that the noise is actually missfire, we removed the leads while running to verify that cylender 3 and 4 are both not firing. holding the leads to the shell shows that it reieves spark and switching the plugs to cylenders that do work shows all the spark plugs are working.

i have been asked to buy a distributor cap and arm as they looked old, but not split. aparently best to replace that first instead of pulling the engine apart.

sorry for the late replies. wasnt getting emails that anyone replied to this.

i dont want to take it back to the seller. before it broke down i did enjoy it and it is the only decent looking mini on the market in my region (new zealand)

You need to do a compression test first. If cylinders 3 and 4 are a problem then the head gasket could have gone. What do all the spark plugs look like? Has it lost any radiator coolant?

Possibly the seller can assist you to sort out this problem and should be willing to teach you some of the basics of mini fault finding and maintenance.

Check that the distributor is not loose and possibly the timing is now too advanced.

My step dad is bringing around a compression tester on Saturday($80 - $300 to buy one it seems).

it has lost coolant, it was about half empty.

since then it looks like there are droplets of clear liquid on one of the pistons. i have been told if it was petrol it should have evaporated by now. a clue was that it does smell sweet, which is aparently a sign of coolant in the cylenders.

Not sure I would bother with a compression test in that case. Get the spanners out and off with its head!

Take the head off and fit a new head gasket.
Whilst the head is off it is always a good idea to re-lap the valves and fit nrw valve stem oil seals.
Thoroughly clean the block deck and head face before re-fitting. If it has a by-pass hose fit a new one.
Set valve clearances to 0.012" cold.
Re-torque and re-set valve clearances after a few heat cycles.
Good luck with it.
