hello

newbie here.

i've owned a 1972 mini van with a replacement engine for 22 years and have just spotted something in the paperwork.

i bought the car from broadspeed in 1996 and in the original ad it says 1293 richard longman gt motor.

i haven't looked at this ad since i bought it and forgot all about it.

a couple of years ago a porsche specialist was working on the mechanics for me and did some research with the engine number and reckons the engine is from an mg metro. my understanding was that these only ever were 1275.

i'm not that au fait with the mechanical side of car ownership, i just like driving the thing so apologies for the potentially stupid question.

my question then is, can both these things be right? ie could it be a richard longman tuned mg metro engine? can you get 1293 from this engine if so? i can't find much about richard longman tuning on the net. so not really clear what engine i actually have.

last question, is this a rare engine? does it have any particular extra value? am thinking of selling the car but not sure if i should be charging a premium for the engine.

any help most welcome.

1293 is a 1275 that’s has been rebored to the next size up.
If the Engine number is still attached then it’s unlikely that Richard longman has rebuilt it, most, but not all Engine builders would put a new number on it.
It could be a Richard longman head though, have a look see if there are any letters/numbers stamped on it

as it stands it is an unknown engine.

and as above if it still has the original engine tag on it it is unlikely to be larger than standard size.

the only way you will find out is to take the head off and measure and anything else would need the engine out and stripped to find out.

many thanks for this. that seems clearer.

the car's at the bodyshop so i'll check the numbers when i'm next with the car.

if it's just an mg metro engine with a longman head does this have any impact on overall value?

also look for any stamped numbers on the head or any stamped letters as they may hive a clue. it may just have a modded longman head or the original "longman" engine is long gone or never was.

Probably wont have a huge impact on the overall value, the longman heads are quite expensive but probably wont add that much value in the grand scheme of things. The car would probably be more valuable with the original engine
