great thread this! sorry for the thread revival, but this answered my question.

my problem is of course that my current setup has 2x the thickest shims and needs adjustment.

The Transfer Housing Gaskets do come in different thicknesses. It may take a little hunting around, though you should be able to find on. One of our local suppliers was having these made, but he's no more unfortunately.

The other easy option is to take your Transfer Housing to a general Jobbing Machine Shop and have them mill the gasket face of it back, I'd suggest calculating how much to come off so that you can set it up now with standard Thrusts and then go thicker again down the track.

yes. thank you. I will. I hate using a new housing when this one is perfectly good apart from this wear.

I did not think I could skim that face on the housing as I thought it would mess up the lower bearing (the one on the end of the shaft)

It'll be less than 0.010" that's coming off, and there's plenty to land that bearing on. Fitting a thinner gasket has the same effect ;D

I know this is the 2nd thread revival, but, I found it very interesting what was said about pinning the thrust washers to the ally casing.

In post #19 Spider agreed it would be a good idea, (beautiful artistry with the idler gear by the way, wish I had my own lathe!) just wondering if there's any disadvantage to doing this, especially with the standard thrust washers, if anyone has actually tried it, and if so, how it held up!

I'm currently building a very mildly tuned A+ 1293 and gearbox, would this be a good mod for longevity and reliability, as I really dont want the thrust washers to eat up the gearbox case!

I have made ‘lockplates’ To stop the original thrusts from spinning but as yet, have not trialed it. I looked long and hard at the transfer housing, but I don’t feel there’s enough meat to pin that one.

For either this method or pinning, unless the housing is properly aligned to the gearbox though, it is in my view pointless.
