My mini will be visiting the body shop soon to have a proper repaint, which includes the engine bay.

I'm contemplating engine removal, so that the engine bay can have a good respray and inspect the firewall for possible fume gateways!

I would also like to do minor engine repairs, like valve seals, manifold gaskets, lambda sensor, etc.

I've read engine removal guides, suggesting either removal of engine or engine plus subframe.

For those who have done it before, considering the work planned, would it be easier to remove the subframe with engine, then have the engine removed from subframe? Or should l just remove the engine from above?

Engine out from the top for me pal every time.

Not the easiest with an spi or the mpi through. with the sensors and lack of space.

I always lift them out of the top.

I did once lift the car over the subframe and engine but I had most of the front cut off.

Also lifting it out of the top will leave the car rolling providing you refit the driveshafts or at least the outer CV joints

A good engine lift, right tools, Haynes manual and something to label all the bits, o yes and pictures go for it

Done many a spi and mpi, each time through the top.

Label the wiring as you go and it'll be easy come refit

The first time I removed the engine and subframe, lifting the car up and over............ never again. If you have a two post lift, then fine, OK.

It's not that difficult taking it out the top if you set yourself up for it before hand. A decent engine hoist with the arm set at its longest, a nice flat work area and room to move is a must.

If your planning on refurbishing the suspension or steering rack drop it all out the bottom but if its just the engine and you have an engine crane take it out the top.
