Hi guys,

I just bought a carb 1275cc 1993 mini cooper (whoop! my first one!!) Im new to minis so need all the advice I can get :)

It looks to be in really good condition with no rust, How do I keep it this way? as from what i've read given a few seconds a mini will become an orange dusty pile on the drive-way.

Also Im looking at insurance quotes, the lowest ones i've gotten are all around the £1k mark. Is this good ? (i'm 18yo)

Thanks, Rob

Hi Rob,

Insurance is going to be a sliding scale as it has WAY too many variables to accurately say whether a quote is good or not. Someone would essentially have to BE you to get any sort of comparison.

Regarding rust prevention, personally I'd go for bilt hamber dynax spray. It'll allow the wax to get into the sills etc with ease and it's technology is far superior to waxoyl.

Steve - as chance would have it, I was just looking at the dynax products. I've used some of their excellent paintwork waxes before, but never any of the 'waxoyl' alternatives.

Looks like they have a cavity spray (S50), an underbody one (UB) and a see-through one for lower panels etc (UC). Is it the S50 you've used? I'm thinking if I get 5 litres I could do all the cavities after my bodywork is done, and also use it under the car, rather than buy the two different products.

regarding the insurance as steve220 said it does vary from person to person, in my case £1k insurance is a bargain. however the most important thing with insurance is don't lie! although very tempting it has the potential to back fire

regarding the rust prevention, Rust Busters products are good, they also offer a full rust proofing service, which given the good condition your Mini is in might be worth getting a quote.

Insurance wise try one of the comparison sites, but Admiral were the cheapest on my daughters Classic Mini

Thanks for the advice everyone i need all the knowledge i can get.

Had a bit of a dilemma with the 93 mini cooper, put an offer in for it, then spent 2 days travelling across the country to go pay and pick it up. Had a quick look round before handing the man the money and discovered the entire back half was more rust than car so ended up pulling out of that trade. Oh well, ill keep looking :)

Thanks, Rob

Don't be too disheartened, Rob. There are plenty out there and one will fall into your budget - out of curiosity, how much do you have to spend?

Without stripping paint and going back to bare metal I would way Hammerite Waxoyl. I heard a lot of good stuff as Rich_959 said about Dynax. Attached are the links below to both. Congrats on your mini! Go for a drive and enjoy!

OP well done for walking away and letting head rule heart - that's impressive discipline at 18. Out of interest what was rusty? Only reason I ask is a nicely corroded rear valance for example looks hideous and alarming (and generally a bad indicator of other issues) - but is actually a really easy cheap fix...

You've a decent budget - show the same restraint apply some effort and the right one will turn up...
