Go back to the seller and ask them what docs they have for it.

You’ll have to apply for a new VIN from the DVLA, so best to phone them up and ask exactly what you need to do. Unfortunately you’ll probably need to go through an SVA test, so you better have done a good job on the resto!

If you contact the DVLA you might be able to get something sorted....maybe. How did he by it with no documents?

If I remember rightly DVLA can't reference via engine number but you may be very very lucky if it's a very late 70's car and it just may have the body / chassis number  in the scuttle drainage channel at the rear centre of the bonnet - general wisdom said this wasn't done until '80 but I've seen the odd one earlier....

Long shot - but entertaining if nothing else - hit google streetview (and vary the dates) - it may have been visible from the road at the address you bought it from - they're very good at anonymising cars on the road - less so off road - may yield the reg to enable to to approach DVSA... like I said a long shot.....

Longer is to track it back to any original classified ad online (try playing with the wayback machine)

If you're really grasping at straws knock up the deceased's ex owners relatives  or neighbours from where you bought it - may remember the reg or have accidentally captured the car in some photos....

Failing all that and you're totally sure the car was never a cat A or B (was just knackered when you bought it rather than being severely accident damaged) you'll have to engage in the fun of putting it on a Q plate.....be prepared for  some grief and jumping through hoops though - as objectively speaking although I hate the fuss - the whole point is to establish car, is safe & not a stolen car being "ringed"
