my neighbour is in the process of building a hotrod/custom car and has asked for my advice and a helping hand on some of it.

the car is an Austin A30 which is having mgb running gear and engine grafted in (at a later date I think it might be turbo'd if I can convince him to go all the way with it)

he is going to fit a different axle in the back and wants to mount it on a 5 link system. the question is what size rose joints should be used on the end of the link bars?

we think the link rods should have taped ends to accept a threaded rose joint with something like M16/18? would that be big enough do we think?

also what diameter should the hole in the speherical end in th erose joint be? I'm guessing M16?

any info appreciated from you knowledgable lot. I know its not a mini, but I'm sure there are plenty of folks on here who have also built other stuff.

My kit car has a 5 link rear end all the joints are 1/2" so 16mm will be more than enough, mine is 4 parallels ( 2 each side) plus a panard for lateral movement, not the ultimate but if you look on the Web there are multiple ideas on the theme, the watts linkage is a nice looking set up which will be important on a hot rod type car. If you look on line for escort rally equipment you can find sections to weld into the floor of the car that takes the links etc. If he uses an atlas axle then you can buy everything you need

May I recommend starting with a Escort 4 link kit. Itd save you an awful lot of time in fabrication and its a well proven setup.

that is a great bit of info, thank you

I'm ok designing and making the gear to fit it all in his car, I just don't know what size rose joints are required for it.

I think that the watts linkage is a bit too fancy for this build, its pretty basic, low tech stuff, its also really old school.

The Watts link was designed for traction engines. Id say thats pretty old school.

what i mean is that old school hot rods are typically thrown together with a 5 link back end, in fact most things are. certainly off the shelf kits for things like escorts/capris/mgb etc are all to convert to 5 link rather than a watts.
