Hi.

Does the driveshaft need to come out to remove the outer CV joint? I need to remove the CV joint to do the disc brake conversion.

I've been reading some of the threads on the forum, to get some information on this, as I've never removed the CV joints before and they all seem to suggest that the driveshafts have to come out.

so you are going drums to discs.

you dont have to remove the drive shafts from the car but it is easier to do so.

popping the inner CV off the box will not allow the pot joint out as it does not fit through the hole in the subframe. X type yes they do. Pots can be split off the drive shaft. or split just watch out for dropping balls.

OK, is there any specific advice for separating the outer CV joint without pulling the drive shaft out?

Thanks. I'm worried to try this job, in case I mess it up completely and then I'm stuck.

Yes. I bought a secondhand set of discs and rebuilt everything. Been putting off fitting them as I wasn't sure how to do the job.

You can get a tool like this to make the job easy without removing the dive shafts;-

But for about a minute's work, I just remove the drive shafts from the car,

That tool is hideously expensive!! This is nearer the price I paid a few years ago   https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hilka-Tools-12720201-Assembly-Removal/dp/B06WXX9FTG    It's so easy to use.

To take the the drive shaft out you need to split it from the pot joint because the pot joint won't come through the subframe as said above - so you either drive the inner end off the pot joint in situ, which is tricky, or release the band holding the boot on the pot joint and carefully pull it out. Big danger of loosing the balls and you'll be lucky to reassemble it all back together in the same place.

I'd lend you my CV remover tool but you are a bit far away!

Found this one by searching the name of the tool, that is sold at a local tools/machine shop. Wouldn't have known what to search for, as I didn't know such a tool existed. Bought a torque wrench from there before and they're usually decently priced. I will get this one then. Thanks guys for pointing me in the right direction :)
