Hi all,

What's the best way to get the oil going around the engine after a rebuild ? MPI engine.

Thanks.

Is it a fresh rebuild? Have you primed the oil pump before hand? If not, you may struggle. If you have, remove the spark plugs and crank the engine until the oil light goes out, put plugs back and start. If its a fresh rebuild with NEW cam, keep it at 2k rpm for a few minutes to wear in, then drive to your engine builders instructions to run it in.

No, it's not a new engine but it has been sat for a few years. I haven't touched the oil pump.

I gave it a go last night but my battery only lasted about 10 seconds before the starter started to slow down..

When you say rebuild, what has been rebuilt?

The primary gear has been changed, the top hat bush was fubbered.

I split engine and box just to have a visual look at everything before putting it all back together.

No, the oil light didn't go out after 10 seconds of cranking, no sparkplugs in either.

It should go out after about 4-5 seconds in my experience. Have you got an oil pressure gauge at all?

No, just a light.

I've read on here that it can take up to a minute to get the pressure

Did you fill the oil filter with oil before fitting it?

If its been standing for a few years it could be that the oil pump has drained down and is too dry to create suction and pick up fresh oil, you did replace the o ring between the block and gearbox didn't you? I'd remove the oil pressure switch and back fill the pump using a pump type oil can. Put the car into gear and push it backwards to get the pump to draw the oil in from the oil can. This should prime the pump and get it picking up oil from the sump so long as that block to sump o ring is correctly positioned.

It's ok now. I removed the filter, put a pipe in the centre hole and blew oil down it a couple of times. Removed the oil temp sender and did the same, and turned the engine backwards and watched as the oil was drawn into the engine. Put it all back together and the light went out after a couple of seconds.
Thanks everyone and thank god this forum exists.

Another question, I will start a new thread, but which way do the ht leads go on ? Haynes says one way, rover another.

Pete.
