I was looking at a Clarke engine hoist on eBay the other day. I almost bid on it when it was £80, thinking that it wasn't exactly cheap but was near enough and would save £70 or so on a new one.

Then it went for £157 when a new one is only £164 when machine mart are doing the vat free offer. What is the point!!!

I'm not bitter but you've got to wonder what people are on! Good for the seller though!

EBay no longer has the bargains it once had.

I can often find things cheaper elsewhere now. If it's car parts often my local breakers yards or auto factors have it cheaper.

Its rare to find bargain tools on eBay. Ive been keeping an eye out for a few things and they just go for daft money.

Same on the liquidation auctions too. Ive bid on a few things early and theyve ended up at really silly prices especially as its always untested. Only time Ive won anything was on complete punts and it still wasnt what Id call a bargain.

Whats really daft is that its now a better bet that youll find new stuff at bargain prices on there (quality be damned!).

I was watching a fibreglass flip front. I spotted it as soon as it went on and it had a 99p auction start and a buy it now of £99. When I next checked on eBay bidding had already started. I suppose someone thought they'd take the chance and might get it a bit cheaper than what the chap was after... nope, it went for £320!!! although it did come with the headlights, indicators and arches and looked a goodun. Bet the chap selling it was buzzing lol

Its the same with books, I remember bidding on a book that went for more than its sold on Amazon!

I guess people get sucked into the bidding and wanting to win. Still, it doesn't take long to do some research before bidding.

Do these things always sell, I've had a good few problems with both sellers and buyers over the last few years.

On your original engine hoist auction ....have you looked at the £110 ones? I got one a couple of years ago and it's not a bad bit of kit?

I've bought one from machine mart. I did consider one of the cheaper ones but I'm always a bit skeptical of eBay unbranded items.

Was bidding on a rough looking second hand spot welder locally. The kind you can buy new from machine mart when they have a vat free evening for £429

Bidding went up to £390  :ohno:

I know which I'd rather have... Oh and I know I'll get most of the money back when I come to sell it!!!  :gimme:
