Just bought a new old stock mini spares centre inlet manifold . Just been dummying it up on the car when I offer the carb and abutment plate up it fouls the manifold. Is it usual to have to modify the abutment plate ? Or am I missing something obvious??

ive seen this problem quite a few times, as stated above use a file or grinder to relieve the metal and itll fit just fine

its because the abutment plate was designed to fit on the standard Austin rover manifolds, (alloy or cast iron) the inlet you have is an aftermarket one so it obviously just wasn't thought through very well when it was designed. iirc my dads mini has this setup and we ground that back to fit.

That spacer does look thin. I'd cut some material away from the plate

Well I've managed to sort it with both a thicker spacer and trimming the abutment plate . Just needs a final couple of tweeks but it's looking good .

Could have just added another spacer with gaskets

Are you going to clean and service the carb ?

Would be pretty tight to the bulkhead though and airbox is already tight. With just the one spacer

Yes will definitely clean and Sevice the carb. Might even have the abutment plate replated. Just trying to solve problems now so when I refit the engine everything bolts straight on .
